2 cupcake trucks for Bay Area: Cupkates Bakery and Kara's Cupcakes

Updated In our inbox two press releases landed right next to each other, both touting brand-new, about-to-launch cupcake trucks in the San Francisco Bay Area - love it!

Busy busy busy here so we're just posting the basic details from the press releases for now but hope that all you San Franciscans and Berkeley residents (ah, Berkeley, my alma mater!) can check them out. One is brand-new, Cupkates Bakery, and the other is an old standby with five other Bay Area locations, Kara's Cupcakes.

Since Cupkates Bakery has already launched and been selling in Berkeley, I think they have a valid claim to being the first. And I also think Berkeley and San Francisco are far enough away from each other (written by someone who was always afraid of getting stuck in SF and not being able to get home on BART) that there is more than enough room for two cupcake trucks in the Bay Area.

Cupkates Bakery (truck pictured above via their site, their logo says their name and "butter, sugar, eggs, flour") is fully in with the Web 2.0 shtick that it seems is now de rigeur for cupcake trucks (I love that there are so many now that things can be "de rigeur" for a cupcake truck). From their bio they emailed:

Cupkates is the very first mobile cupcake truck in the Bay Area. We roam around Berkeley and Oakland vending delicious cupcakes straight from the truck. (Yes, like a taco truck with cupcakes.) Our cupcakes are baked fresh daily using only the highest quality ingredients, including Madagascar Bourbon vanilla, Guittard chocolate, and Clover sweet cream butter and milk.

They are on Flickr and Twitter (@CupKatesTruck)), Tweeting things like this:

Here is their usual route, via their site, but make sure to follow them on Twitter for the latest:

And guess what kind of cupcakes they have? S'mores, my favorite! Sadly their photo I'd originally posted got removed from Flickr, but here's the description:

A gooey chocolate cake, sandwiched between a crunchy graham cracker crust bottom and hand-toasted marshmallow frosting.

And here's a photo of Kate (get it, CupKATE?) in the truck via Flickr:

And people lining up at the Caltopia launch:

Here's all their other flavors, and they also do custom orders - email kate at cupkatesbakrey.com for those:

Thought my fellow cupcake lovers would also like to know that SF has a 3rd cupcake truck - SweetRoll from Sweetface Bakery. I found them at the Eat Real Fest and apparently that was the truck's debut too. It's totally cute, and the strawberry chocolate cupcake was delish!
