7,000 pound cupcake goes for world record

I'm posting this entire press release in part because I'm lazy, but mostly because it's just so over-the-top I can't resist. Next week we'll have an interview with their CEO.

You can also get in on our very own attempt to make a cupcake world record with Nora of cupcake kebab fame this Wednesday. Details here in our August cupcake calendar and also be sure to come this Sunday to our cupcake picnic. Join our NYC cupcake meetup group to get the latest NYC details.

Press release:

THE CUPCAKE WARS ARE SO ON!!
TWO DUDES, A BAKER AND AN OVEN MAKER = RECORD 7000 LB CUPCAKE
And Raises Money For Susan G. Komen’s Passionately Pink For The Cure

WHAT: On August 15th, 2009, GourmetGiftBaskets.com will break the Guinness Book of World Records record for the World’s Largest Cupcake. In doing so, GiftBaskets.com will put a definitive end to the “Cupcake Wars” that have been raging in the gourmet food community for the last two years. The cupcake most recently crowned “The World’s Largest Cupcake” on July 20, 2009 for a cupcake weighed in at only 151 pounds, and stood just one foot tall by two feet wide.

The GourmetGiftBaskets.com cupcake will deal a crushing blow to all previous record attempts. It will weigh a whopping 7,000 pounds and tower over 7 feet tall!

This enormous cupcake should put a definitive end to the Cupcake Wars. Or will it...

WHO: GourmetGiftBaskets.com was named the internet’s fastest growing retailer in 2008 by Internet Retailer magazine, and was recently named to the Inc. Magazine “Inc. 500” list as one of the fastest growing privately held companies in America. After always dreaming of breaking a world record, GourmetGiftBaskets.com president, Ryan Abood (30) and director of corporate sales, Mike Howard (31) will be using their gourmet food expertise to achieve their shared life-long dream of breaking a Guinness Book of World Records record.

They are working with baker George Algarin, who baked the giant cupcake as seen on MTV’s Paris Hilton’s “My New BFF” show, along with his team from Southern California’s Merengue Bakery to prepare and bake the giant cupcake, and Jeff Fadler of Jensen Industries’ industrial ovens, to create a custom mold and bake the giant cupcake in a suitably giant oven.

This event will also raise money, through the sale of pieces of the world’s largest cupcake, and donations for photos with the world’s largest cupcake, to benefit Susan G. Komen’s Passionately Pink for the Cure, a program encouraging people to wear pink, raise funds and fight breast cancer.

WHEN: August 15, 2009 at the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise in Detroit, MI, the world's largest one-day celebration of classic car culture that attracts over 1.5 million visitors. The cupcake will be transported in the early morning of August 15th and delivered on-site at 7:30 am. It will be on display at the Dream Cruise, from 9 am-12 pm. At noon, a celebration will take place, with a Guinness Book of World Record’s representative announcing to the world the new record. Attendees will be invited to taste the record breaking cupcake and to pose for photos with donations collected
for Susan G. Komen’s Passionately Pink for the Cure.

WHERE: Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise on the southwest corner of Woodward Ave. and 13 Mile.

WHY: Abood and Howard wanted to break a Guinness World Record, and make it a meaningful one. After learning of recent record-breaking attempts, they knew they could break the record. So, they reached out to Algarin, who had already built a giant cupcake in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records Record only months ago, but was disqualified on a technicality. When they spoke to Algarin about how they might go about making a giant cupcake, he said, “I want in!” and this dream-team partnership was formed.

HOW: Made of over $10,000 worth of ingredients, this vanilla cupcake, filled with vanilla custard, will be baked at 280 degrees for about 24 hours in a six foot wide, six foot tall oven, on August 14th , the day before the Dream Cruise. After baking, a crane will lift the oven off the cupcake and a forklift will raise the cupcake and place it into a refrigerated truck. The massive cupcake will travel unfrosted, 52 miles from Jensen Industries to the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise. A forklift will be on-site at Woodward and 13th Mile to lift the cupcake from the truck to the display area for frosting, sampling and photo opportunities.
