A reader told me a while ago that we have to check out the cupcakes at Second Stop Cafe in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which happens to be very close to where I live. It's not a cupcake place per se, and in fact, only occasionally has cupcakes. But when I went there on Saturday, they had these:

The non-cupcake item is a Cocoa Puff treat, like a Rice Krispie treat. I had them all on my table as I made notes in my notebook and read, and took photos of the desserts before I ate them. This woman sitting next to me said, "That's quite a breakfast," and I laughed and then we proceeded to talk for an hour.
I shared the cupcake with white frosting with her, which actually is an orange cream cheese frosting on chocolate cake. Now, here's where my taste bud biases come through; I kindof hate orange. Not oranges the fruit, but orange flavor. Same with cherry. It just does nothing for me. So while I can tell you the frosting was creamy, had a good texture, was smooth and rich, basically, what else I can say is that it tasted like orange. I wasn't into it.

But here's where having a friend (or, in my case, new friend/stranger) to share cupcakes with is key. Not only didn't I want to waste the $3 cupcakes, but I also am just not in a position to judge an orange cupcake. But she was, and she pronounced it just like a creamsicle and seemed to really like it.
The chocolate one, on the other hand, I can tell you about. The frosting was rich, almost chocolate pudding-ish, and sweet but not too sweet. I didn't eat it all but enjoyed it in its gooeyness and the cake was moist and tasty, could've been a smidge sweeter if you ask me, but went really well with the frosting.

They also serve Stumptown Coffee, but since I don't drink coffee, I had the Irish Breakfast tea. They also have wireless and are right off the Lorimer stop on the L train. So if you're in the neighborhood and want a cupcake, especially now that Cheeks is gone, stop in and hope they're serving them that day.

This cupcake I tried on a previous visit and...is an example of why food blogging needs to be an immediate thing. I barely remember how it was, but I'm pretty sure it was not bad, but not as good as the chocolate one I just had.
