Last Friday evening, a confluence of events made the perfect storm. It was nice spring weather. It was still spring break for many high schools and colleges and all the adults were too busy talking about the iPad to notice the big crowd lined up at 25 Howard Street in Soho for Johnny Cupcakes' suitcase tour. I was surprised how many people there at 7:45PM, when the doors were to open at 8PM. Honestly, I was not the only one surprised. Johnny Cupcake himself was amazed too. He jumped on the Johnny Cupcakes van and promised to stay until everyone got a chance to come in.

I spent my time scanning the crowd. Some people were wearing Johnny Cupcakes T-shirts. One guy I met had Johnny Cupcakes tattoo on his arm. Most of the fans were from New York area including Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut. Here's video of the line.

It was interesting to be a witness to a different subculture that was tangentially related to cupcakes. Most of the people who come to our events are not the same demographic that I saw Friday night which was younger and more male than female. Their passion and excitement was contagious, but instead of me staying on a long line to get a new T-shirt, I went home and bought one online. It was on sale!
