Magic Kingdom- Magic Cupcakes

A Review of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom Vanilla Cupcakes by Klassy Kakes

Back in November 2009, I ate a vanilla cupcake in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom theme park. The Main Street Bakery offers several tempting treats. Little did I realize that it would become my holy grail of vanilla cupcakes.
My first bite, a cross section cut cleanly with a knife (as all cupcakes should be thoughtfully sampled), was rather unimpressive. As I sipped my coffee and visited with my brother, I just had to take another bite- this time just the cake (as all second bites should be) - hmmm, pound cake. O.k. it’s not some super crazy gourmet specialty flavor. In fact, vanilla is not even my favorite cupcake flavor. So, on to the next dessert- chocolate cake. But the cupcake kept calling me to taste it again. My third bite was a pinch of the frosting (yes, as all 3rd bites should be) - medium consistency, sweet, buttery, typical vanilla buttercream. More coffee. Hmm, maybe I needed to taste the cake and frosting together again- a small bite, not with knife, a natural mouth bite (as all 4th bites should be). The combination was perfect- magical! Finally, it dawned on me; this cupcake was powder puff pink heaven! Perhaps the magic kingdom happiness vibe, the gorgeous sunny day, Mickey, Minnie, Cinderella, or even being with my family, were all clouding my cupcake palette. Perhaps all of that joy goes into making this such a magical cupcake experience.

The jumbo vanilla cupcakes are truly a Main Street treat. They are jumbo- really jumbo, like the size of my 3 year old’s head! And at $2.44 they are a rare bargain to be found anywhere in Walt Disney World. There are definitely not any jumbo cupcakes in Miami for such a cheap price! It made such an impression on me that my recent trip to Walt Disney World for a family wedding became the quest for the vanilla cupcake.
The wedding was fine, the park-fine. The kids, fine. All I could think about was getting another giant vanilla cupcake!!! After 5 hours of rides, pictures, and shows I finally get my chance.

I get in line at the bakery- taking photos as if I were cupcake paparazzi. The cupcakes are whimsical looking- frosted in either light pink or powder puff blue, with traditional sprinkles. I bought 4, just to make sure I had enough for now, later, and to share. There is no other flavor of cupcake, no gourmet combinations, no trendy red velvet, no Swiss meringue buttercream, and no Valrhona chocolate. Just vanilla, not Massey Yardley, not Tahitian, no flecks of bean anywhere in or on the cupake. A pure and simple kid friendly cupcake. Now it’s time to leave the Magic Kingdom- monorail, tram, Minnie row 43, minivan - 4 hours to Miami. The kids are finally asleep in their car seats, 2 hours to go, and part of a jumbo cupcake calling my name from the front console of the minivan. O.k., I’ll cut off a piece for the driver to help wake him up and I’ll just have a sliver. Oh, just one more. We actually had the tiniest sliver still in the box waiting for my dear friend Jen to taste, but it was so unappealing looking this morning that I decided it wasn’t good enough for her and I ate it myself. After it was gone I was sad knowing that I would have to wait until I went back to the Magic Kingdom before I would ever taste such happiness again.

Forget Cinderella's Castle and Harry Potter. This narration of the Main Street Bakery cupcakes is making me want to take a field trip to the Magic Kingdom just so I can try one in all its vanilla glory, even though, just like the author, vanilla isn't my favorite flavor. The description just make it sound THAT good.
