Red Velvet with Raspberry Frosting at Made Fresh Daily

Being away from Chicago during the week can leave us craving our hometown’s cupcakes; however, New York isn’t the worst location for an out of town project - especially since there are cupcake shops on almost every corner. This afternoon, we were in New York’s Financial District and needed a cupcake fix, but learned the Cupcake Stop, a convenient 5 minute jaunt from our desks, was under repair. Booooo! We quickly yelped an alternative cupcake venue and discovered the South Street Seaport’s Made Fresh Daily. The menu boasts a “Cupcake of the Day”. Done!

The shop was an easy walk from the south end of Wall Street.

The inside of the shop is bright and warm – kind of like we were walking into a friend’s apartment. (Minus the numerous paraphernalia hanging from the ceiling. We don't know anyone who has that in their apartment).

The Cupcake of the Day was Red Velvet with Raspberry Frosting. We weren’t immediately sold on the flavor combination, but decided to give it a shot. The cupcakes came in two sizes: Regular ($2.95) and Mini ($1.50).

We obviously purchased two of each to appropriately assess the bakery’s Cupcake of the Day. And also since one cupcake each sometimes just isn’t enough.

We wanted to take the cupcakes to go, but with the 90 degree heat and lack of appropriate packaging (they were placed in a white paper bag), the cupcakes would not have fared well on the 8 minute journey back. So, we grabbed a table at the bakery and sat down with our goods. We did some dissecting to see what we were about to consume:

Looked tasty:

We agreed the cupcake had an appropriate amount of moistness - complete with a crisp outer layer that complimented its density. The frosting had a hint of cream cheese infused with gentle overtones of raspberry. The lack of stiffness in frosting made us ponder whether its consistency was a product of the day’s hot and humid weather or if the semi-runny texture was intentional. Although we would likely never duplicate this flavor combination while baking at home, we appreciated the unique twist to capture the chocolate/raspberry union that so many typically enjoy - it was still delicious.

On to the mini’s:

The ratio of frosting to cake was a bit overwhelming to the palate. Where the regular sized cupcake compensated for the amount of frosting, the mini was overpowered by it. Additionally, because of its small size, the moistness of the cake was compromised. The raspberry placed on top of the cupcakes neither added nor detracted from the taste - bonus points for presentation, though.

In the future, we probably wouldn’t make the trip just for this featured cupcake combination, but the enticing Cupcake of the Day phenomenon as well as the solid basic elements of Made Fresh Daily’s cupcake will keep us coming back for more.
