Recapping the Cupcake Bike Tour Chicago

Saturday was the perfect day for bikes and cupcakes in Chicago. Word spread on a few different websites about the tour, but it was thechainlink.org that brought most of the cyclists out to ride and taste cupcakes. Here are a bunch of pics from the event: Juneann via flickr and saumacus via flickr.

First, we met at Fritz Pastry which actually had only two cupcakes to choose from: chocolate or vanilla. Sorry, Fritz - You have a great cupcake but we need more of a selection! Fritz is a really nice storefront shop with a delicious and bright seating area. It is a cute and quiet place for a cup of joe and a tasty treat. I found it particularly interesting that they do not use an actual cup for their cupcake. However, they are a pastry shop so that is a nice touch!

Next, we went to Sweet Mandy B's at Webster and Racine. They're so old school, they don't even have a website. They don't need one; they are always busy and very well-known in the city. It was bustling as usual and the line of hungry customers wound around the bakery. Their classic hand-frosted cupcake is unmatched. There's something magical about Sweet Mandy B's that makes their cupcake my favorite. I can't put my finger on it. It's something you have to try for yourself! Bonus: they've added additional seating! We tried the french toast cupcake, banana and chocolate, red velvet, double chocolate, and the caramel apple.

From there, we biked over to Molly's Cupcakes. Molly's is a unique and unforgettable cupcakery. It is one of a kind. They have swings at their cupcake bar. Yes, I said swings. Their selection of classic or filled cupcakes is vast. So many to choose from! They were super busy but still had everything in stock. Empty trays went out and new trays went in. We had a mint mash-up, a lemon kiwi meringue, and the chocolate chip cookie - it has cookie dough inside of it!

The last stop was Phoebe's Cupcakes. We were already pretty cupcaked out at this point but then we saw it: the maple bacon cupcake, in all of its splendor. Since it was International Bacon Day, there was no stopping that bacon cupcake. It was definitely the grand finale of this event. Phoebe's is a really cute shop with a great selection of take home goodies like cupcake toppers and unique sprinkles. They also have "dogcakes" and other treats so bring your pup!

3.5 miles of bike riding on a fantastic summer day and cupcakes galore. It doesn't get much better than that!
