Au Bon Pain restaurant chain now selling vanilla, chocolate and red velvet cupcakes

Nation's Restaurant News reports that Au Bon Pain is now selling cupcakes - funny because I was in one yesterday getting food, but didn't even venture near the bakery section. Will check them out today. Via Fork in the Road.

The Boston-based company began offering cupcakes in three flavors — French vanilla, double chocolate and red velvet — last week across its 220-unit chain. The cupcakes are priced at $2.99, or two for $5, in most markets.

The new offering was announced Friday on Facebook and Twitter.

Ed Frechette, Au Bon Pain’s senior vice president for marketing, said Monday that based on early sales the company is considering making the cupcakes a permanent addition to the menu.

“Red velvet is the best selling by far,” he added.

So after reading this post yesterday I went to Au Bon Pain to try these.

The first thing I noticed was that the red velvet was larger than both the chocolate & vanilla cupcakes. The sign said they were 2.99 each and had calorie information under the price. I think the red velvet was 400 calories...There was no sign that said they were 2 for $5 but that is the price they charged for the 2 (choclate & RV) that I bought.

The chocolate was good. Very fudgey with a decent (if slightly average) chocolate frosting. The red velvet was delicious. A generous amount of cream cheese frosting with chocolate shavings topped the very moist red velvet cake. The red velvet had a true red velvet taste, not just "chocolate light" as some poorly made red velvets have.

Over all I would recommend both cupcakes, though the red velvet was the better of the two.
