Last Tuesday, I attended the B5 Media party on Tuesday night at Kingswood in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village neighborhood to promote its three Web sites, Blisstree, Crushable, and The Gloss. There were cupcakes from Babycakes there.

Or, I'll take 'em all.

Vegan, which is excellent, plus sour cherries and poppy seeds? And cream cheese frosting? Perfection.
But then I saw this one:

Turkish fig and vanilla bean vegan cupcake? Might have to go with this one.
But then I decided, just cause I'm in a chocolate kinda mood, that this one is my pick:

Vegan spicy chocolate with cinnamon. With almond milk.
All images by QuintanaRoo, whose pictures I love. Quintana Roo, by the way, is where I went on my honeymoon.

Fair Cake cupcake classes yield beautiful results

Ah. Well, these classes were held in London at Fair Cake (basic cupcake class info here). *sigh* A tad bit too far for me to commute.

Beautiful work!

Orange strawberry poppyseed mini cupcakes, $1 each, Hester Street Fair, NYC
I stopped by the Hester Street Fair today to visit Kumquat Cupcakery, one of our favorites, who is also selling this weekend at the Brooklyn Flea. Her mini cupcakes are $1 each and she had 5 flavors on offer. The orange strawberry poppyseed cupcakes, which were delicious and not too overpowering (I'm not a huge orange fan), a dark chocolate mini cupcake that was wonderful, as well as chocolate peanut butter, lemon lavender and red velvet. See the Kumquat Cupcakery blog and Twitter (@kumquatcupcakes) to find out where they are on any given day.

PattyCakes mini cupcake delivery from NJ
New Jersey cupcakery PattyCakes just sent me a box of bite-size do-it-yourself cupcakes to taste, photograph and review:

I don't recall it being marked perishable, but it did arrive two days after it was mailed (a Monday to Wednesday travel schedule).
First thing I noticed was the cute packaging:

The packing peanuts are made out of corn starch and dissolve in water. That was a BIG plus to me, as I detest Styrofoam and the wastefulness of most packing materials. This might be even better than my first choice, popcorn.
There was a sweet note included in the box giving directions and information about PattyCakes's dedication to the environment. Another plus.

In correspondence with Patty I mentioned that I was a vegetarian who almost never gets to try marshmallow cupcakes, because they are usually made with gelatin. Patty sent an extra-large helping of the vegetarian (!!) marshmallow topping for me.
The mini-minis (they are bite-size) cupcakes came in egg containers! Too cute and a great idea for shipping. The wrappers, which were soaked by the cupcake grease, looked like they had a cute print on them (but I couldn't be sure what exactly it was).

I am not normally a fan of sprinkles, so I constructed the cupcakes without findings.

Patty's instructions were to dip the cupcakes in frosting and then the sprinkles, but I found it much easier to spread the frosting with an offset spatula or a knife.

I did dip them in the sprinkles though, just to see what they'd look like.
PattyCakes sent chocolate chip, dark chocolate, and red velvet cupcakes. My favorite were the chocolate chip, because they had a bit of texture in them. The cakes themselves were fine. A tiny bit dry from shipping, but tasty. The red velvet was moist, and stood up to the trip.
The two frostings included were marshmallow and raspberry. I actively disliked the raspberry (crisco-ish and tasteless) but the marshmallow was sweet and marshmallow-y. As I said I don't like the waxy taste of sprinkles so I didn't eat them.
I would say that these cupcakes are best for kids and kids' parties. I can imagine how excited all the kids would be assembling and topping their own mini cupcakes and the flavor profiles are perfect for children. These are not sophisticated cupcakes. But who says they have to be?

Zebra cupcakes at Disney Food Blog
Over at The Disney Food Blog, AJ posted about these amazing-looking zebra cupcakes!
It’s clearly the Disney dining equivalent of avant garde artwork — a representation of a zebra vs. an actual molded animal, as you find in the White Chocolate Elephant Cupcake, also sold at Kusafiri Bakery. Personally, I think it’s beautiful, and it actually reminds me of the puppeteer-ed floats that prowl the streets of the Animal Kingdom during the parade each afternoon; the angular puppets, stark color contrasts, and artistic animal representations in the parade make me feel that this cupcake is right at home with the way the Imagineers are presenting the animal details in the park. They’ll often give you the impression of the animal, and your imagination takes it the rest of the way.
Zebra Cupcake Cross Section
But, we’re not here to talk detail and design. Let’s talk cupcake. As I said, the thing is giant; easily the size of the chocolate peanut-butter cupcake and easily enough to split between two (or three!) people. The vanilla cake is incredibly moist and super-sweet (I’m always amazed how they keep the mass-produced cake tasting so fresh and moist). And the mounds of vanilla buttercream frosting, again, have a great texture. This frosting is creamier than your typical birthday cake frosting, though — it’s not the same stuff you find on the Butterfinger Cupcake. While just as thick, it’s smoother.

One of the things I love about the cupcake world is that there is always something new, a new twist whether it's design, shape, flavor or decoration. Case in point: these adorable tie-dyed mini cupcakes with rum frosting topped with hearts.
