Sprinkles Cupcakes NYC cost $500,000 to design

The New York Times looks at the design of the recently-opened Manhattan branch of Sprinkles Cupcakes:

Andrea Lenardin Madden, the Los Angeles-based architect who designed the shop, said it was an attempt to capture the “joy that surrounds the cupcake craze.” (Ms. Madden designed all 10 Sprinkles shops, beginning with the first one, in Beverly Hills, in 2005; none are identical.)

The budget for the 2,350-square-foot space, which includes the ground floor (left), an upstairs party room and a basement, was around $500,000, said Charles Nelson, who owns the stores with his wife, Candace.

And a reminder: Friday in Palo Alto you can meet Kristi Yamaguchi at Sprinkles Palo Alto!

Um, this is kind of ridiculous. Just putting that out there. I think it's really the quality of the product that matters and design should be secondary. But what do I know? :)
