Back in late September, my husband and I attended Bikes, Blues & BBQ, one of the biggest biker rallies in the country and of course I had to check out the local cupcakeries. A chain local to Arkansas called Bliss was right down the street from where we were staying, so we headed there on the bike as soon as we got a chance.
The shop itself was cute, with a nice logo and inviting but small café style front. The worker was pleasant and patient as we decided what to get. In addition to their normal cupcake fare, they had gluten free and their red velvet was decorated for the Razorbacks, who were playing that weekend.
Now for the cupcakes themselves. They were a nice medium size but at $3.25 plus tax each (in Arkansas), they were way overpriced. You can get jumbos for that in KC. We chose four from the end of day selection: Banana Pudding, Red Velvet (Razorbacks), Strawberry Bliss and Salted Caramel. The banana pudding was the winner, with the best overall taste and texture, but the red velvet had the all too familiar tang of too much food coloring and the razorback was a thick, inedible gelatin. The salted caramel icing had a nice flavor, but the vanilla cake was tasteless. The strawberry cake was heavy because they used real strawberries, but tasted more like a muffin than a cupcake and the icing was also rather tasteless.
However, it did give me the opportunity to hold a box of cupcakes in my lap on the way back to our hotel (we've found after many attempts that the saddle bags are a waste of time).
