New bakery Cupcakes & Co. in Burbank, California

I can't find a website for this place but it sounds good! If you've tried their cupcakes or have any news, let us know.

"Designing the perfect cupcake," The Burbank Leader

Frosting-covered rows of cupcakes were neatly lined on shelves like sugary soldiers Monday afternoon at downtown Burbank’s newest bakery.

In precision formation they sat with sprinkles, tiny chocolate balls and ripened fruits crowning their tops in the lobby of Cupcakes & Co., a family-run shop specializing in designer cupcakes.

“We’re trying to do some unique flavors so it’s not always the traditional thing,” said Maryanne Tongko, president of Cupcakes & Co. and daughter of head chef Cynthia Tongko, who opened the business on Saturday.

The small confections behind clear glass in the front of the newly designed and opened shop on East Magnolia Boulevard are all originals made by Cynthia Tongko.

Even though they deal almost exclusively in cupcakes, the idea for the shop came from the family’s signature Dutch apple pie, which they served to high demand at their Sunland restaurant, Prism Bistro, for years.

“This bake shop really stemmed from that,” Maryanne Tongko said.

Diners were so enamored of the buttery, made-from- scratch pie, Cynthia Tongko decided to close the restaurant and focus on sweets full time.

By housing a rotating menu of 23 kinds of cupcakes with no added preservatives and all fresh, natural ingredients, Cynthia Tongko hopes to keep the selection from getting stale.

Just tried Cupcakes & Co. and overall a good experience. Though more of an occasional visit type of place as opposed to regular, for me.

Flavors tried: carrot cake, wicked chocolate, red velvet (with raspberry frosting), strawberry cheesecake, and something purple made with an asian root vegetable. The favors are solid, and most of the cupcakes are ornate and very rich, leading to the $3.00 plus price tag.

The cupcakes are average size, with a fair ratio of frosting to cake. In fact, these cupcake are more like individual pieces of cake than a traditional cupcake.

I'd like to see a few more flavor options. If I return, I may try the green tea or the individual cup-pie (apple).

For the next cupcake fix, I will have to return to Yummy's. Simple cupcakes with twists/updates that are lighter and more cupcake-y.

Baron tried them last week and said that they were hands down the worst cupcakes he's ever had. (And he's been to 50+ cupcakeries!)

I tried them the other day and LOVED their cupcakes. They have some strange flavors like purple yam, which was really interesting by my favorites were the spanish vanilla and chocolate cheesecake and their coconut and oh my god their apple pie is sooooo good! I like their style better than sprinkles because they have different cake bases and frostings as opposed to sprinkles which have pretty much the same type of cakes.. also i found their cupcakes to be moist and their frostings had just enough sweetness and didn't go overboard with the sugar. personally i don't like buttercream frostings in general but their are nice and airy. I'll definitly be back for more. BTW their customer service seems more personal too.

Tried their red velvet cupcake. It was like eating a piece of cardboard. Maybe it was because I went right before closing time and it had been sitting around all day?

Would not go back though, I prefer Auntie Em's or Yummy's.

Shame, I really wanted to like this place since it's close to the movie theater. :(

just stopped by earlier today and i love the look of the place; it's so modern. I had the carrot cupcake and it was perfectly moist and dense with this to die for cream cheese frosting.

I had these cupcakes and I just ahad to write a review about it. These cupcakes are great!!! I take the time to drive from Pomona every weekend to get some of these delicious cupcakes for my office and pregnant wife. I came across this place while visiting the mall. try the apple pies, and the cheesecake; they are beyond delicious. I also ordered a chocolate cake for my nephew's birthday and they did a great job. At most birthday parties you see cake being thrown away but with this cake all you see is people practically licking the plates and asking for seconds. I would definately recommend this cupcake shop to everyone.

oooh la la vanilla!! it's perfect, they have this moist and soft vanilla cupcake and they fill it with creme brulee then frost it with vanilla buttercream. I can't wait to try their other flavors.

I tried Cupcake's & Co. a few weeks ago and will NEVER return. As a not only a cupcake efficienado but also a culinary school grad, I know my cupcakes.
I only tried the vanilla and chocolate because the other flavors did not look appetizing at all. I mean, call me unoriginal, but I prefer my red velvet the old fashioned way with CREAM CHEESE FROSTING! The chocolate was nothing special, and the vanilla cake was so dry I could hardly swallow it without water. Plus it was filled with some mystery filling that was unsettling.
I was told that everything was made with real butter but I find that EXTREMLY hard to beleive because when I bit into the vanilla frosting all I tasted was sugary shortening. I couldn't even finish it.
Maybe it just a bad day at the Cupcake Co. but I'm sticking with Yummy Cupcakes up the street. I prefer their cupcakes any day...plus they have better parking and are better priced.

Cupcakes & Co. got it right. I tried the Wicked and its the absolute best. My boyfriend got a banana cupcake with cream cheese frosting (forgot what its called but was really good) and had to order some to go. I didn't get the idea of having apple pie at a cupcake store but the girl insisted it was really good and she was so nice we had to get. Thank god we listened to her because it was amazing, probably the best pie i have ever had. Sorry grandma. Anyway, will have to go back soon, can't stop thinking about it.

"something purple made with an asian root vegetable."

It's called "ube" and it's native to the Philippines.
