News from The Bleeding Heart Bakery

Chicago's The Bleeding Heart Bakery does something I recommend all bakeries should do: send a monthly newsletter. Once a month isn't too intrusive, and helps remind people you exist and spread the news. They are also on Flickr, and do all kinds of fun, cool promotions, some of which we're highlighting below. See also our interview with Bleeding Heart Bakery owner Michelle Garcia.

"Charity Cakes" Program

Hey Non Profits!

Everyone needs a helping hand once in a while and we are well aware of that. We recieve about 10 emails a day asking for donations. For a few years now we rarely said no, but at the end of the year, we were in a deficit and on top of it, few people used the gift cert. etc which we donated, hence never getting them into the shop, which is the point on our end. So, we have come up with an answer. We WILL NO LONGER BE DOING STRAIGHT DONATIONS of product or gift certificates unless it is an organization of which Michelle is a member. Instead, we are introducing a new program called "Charity Cakes". Every month we will highlight one charity. There will be information and flyers about the purpose of the charity avaiable for our customers. We will also be designing a cupcake for your charity with a topper with your logo on it. One dollar from the sale of each cupcake will be given to you at the end of the month. This way, we both win...see, isn't it nice to share?

This month they are supporting Chicago roller derby player Tequila Mockingbird, picutred below, who injured her spinal cord during a bout, by donating $1 from every one of the special cupcakes above that they sell. You can also donate to the cause at www.helptequila.com.

On August 25, 2007, Tequila Mockingbird, a veteran Chicago roller derby player for The Fury, fell and seriously injured her spinal cord during a bout. That night her team huddled in the hospital and vowed to support her throughout her recovery. Since that day, Tequila has been in hospitals, relearning old skills : how to hold a pen, feed herself, and operate her wheelchair. She has been a roller girl since 2004 and is known for always hustling and pushing herself, being a role model for all skaters, and helping her team win 2 championships. The injury has limited most of the movement in her limbs, restricting her freedom, independence, and most importantly, her ability to work. Tequila is a fighter who wants to make a full recovery; however, she needs our support to make it possible.
