Last week on The Martha Stewart Show, (click here to watch it), we told you that two of our favorite local (NYC) bakeries are Sugar Sweet Sunshine on the Lower East Side and Brooklyn-based roving bakery Kumquat Cupcakery. I just wanted to revisit these favorites and share some more info; we encourage you to check them out.

Sugar Sweet Sunshine is one of the reasons I started this blog. I loved their cupcakes, and the homey feel of their bakery. I still think it's such a welcoming outpost on the Lower East Side, and everything a bakery should be: delicious, fun, involved with the community. Almost every time I go there, I run into someone I know. I see lots of families, and people on dates there. They make it a place to hang out and put out consistently delicious cupcakes. Click here to read my 2005 Gothamist interview with them.
Here are the flavors Sugar Sweet Sunshine offers:
Sunshine: Yellow cake with vanilla buttercream
Bob: Yellow cake with chocolate almond buttercream
Ooey Gooey: Chocolate cake with chocolate almond buttercream
Sexy Red Velvet: Red velvet cake with “The Moose”
Sassy Red Velvet: Red Velvet cake with chocolate almond buttercream
Black & White...Just Right: Chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream
Pistachio: Pistachio cake with “The Moose”
Pumpkin: Pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing
Lemon Yummy: Lemon cake with lemon buttercream
Coconut: Coconut cake with meringue
Kumquat Cupcakery cupcakes I bought this weekend and took to a party - Banana Creme, Chocolate Mousse, Red Velvet
Kumquat Cupcakery specializes in mini cupcakes, and each week brings new flavors to two Brooklyn flea markets (Artists and Fleas in Williamsburg, and the Brooklyn Brownstoner Flea Market in Fort Greene), as well as Newsbar in Manhattan. Click here to read our interview with Keavy of Kumquat Cupcakery. You can see their site for a detailed description of all their flavors, I'll just post my absolute favorite here, the peanut butter chocolate ones:
"Strawberries & Creme Cupcake"
"Banana Creme Cupcake"
"Coffee Caramel Bourbon Cupcake"
"Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes"
"Better than a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup", " More addicting than crack," is how I've heard this cupcake described more than a few times. With it's dense chocolate exterior, and it's gooey peanut butter center this cupcake quickly becomes a favorite to all peanut butter lovers who come across it.
"Cappuccino Cupcakes"
"Orange Truffle Cupcakes"
"Lemon & Lavender Cupcakes"
"Lemon filled Vanilla Cupcake"
"Chocolate Mousse Cupcake"
"Black and White Cupcake"
(Coming soon......)
"Chocolate Raspberry Cupcakes" (out of season)
White Chocolate Raspberry (out of season)
"Vanilla Cupcake"
"Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes"
"Red Velvet"
