Will ice cream replace cupcakes as a "cult dessert" as Gourmet predicts for 2009?

Gourmet magazine offers up its 2009 predictions and says, "On the sweets front, ice cream will supplant cupcakes as the cult dessert of the moment..."

Of course, as I've said, I think the whole "___ are the new cupcakes" trend is ridiculous, aside from the fact that there are ice cream cupcake combinations galore and that plenty of people enjoy both ice cream and cupcakes, whether eaten together or separately (though personally I'm a massive frozen yogurt fan).

And is Gourmet implying that cupcake bloggers and others passionate about cupcakes are part of a cult?

What do you think?

half the appeal of cupcakes is the cuteness factor... ice cream is hardly ever cute, especially when its all melty. gross!

*gasp* NEVER!
I'm not much for ice cream and you can't even make cool art out of it! AND, have you ever seen an ice cream shaped cupcake? I don't think so!

I'm just now starting to get into cupcake decorating thanks to inspiration from this blog. The cupcake craze shall never die! It's cake!...in a cup!

i hope not! no matter what the "trend" is i'll still love cupcakes. plus it'd be such a hassle, ice cream isnt as versatile or transportable or DELICIOUS as cuppies. i refuse! :P

I know that around here ice cream was a big deal like two or three years ago, so I don't think we'll go back to that so soon. Plus cupcakes are an all year round thing, moreso than ice cream.

If ice-cream does replace cupcakes, everyone should try Jeni's Ice-Cream out of Columbus, Ohio (also available on dean & deluca's website)... it is local, artistic, and amazing!!!
