This event, the cupcake art show Frosted Inspiration, is taking place at Mitrebox Framing in Minneapolis, with cupcakes supplied by the wonderful Sheela Namakkal of Miel y Leche, a personal favorite of mine, who sells her cupcakes at Mitrebox every Saturday (see her blog for weekly flavors and other locations).
Here's Amy's bio:
Amy Rice is a Minneapolis mixed media artist. Her work is primarily produced by using stencils that she designs and cuts herself. Although this method is basically a form of printmaking, she has the freedom to experiment with color, surface texture, and grouping of objects and thus mood and tone, making each piece unique. She has shown her work in galleries throughout the U.S. and in the U.K. Rice draws inspiration for her work from childhood memories, both real and imagined (or just slightly exaggerated with time), the urban community in which she lives, childhood toys, vintage botanical prints, her dog Ella, bicycles, street art, random found objects, collective endeavors that challenge hierarchy, acts of compassion, downright silliness and things with wings.
Cupcakes have been a reoccurring theme in Rice’s work for many years. In 2005 her solo exhibition The Traveling Cupcake Show opened in two UK galleries, in a Madison, WI and a Minneapolis gallery in the same evening. In 2007 The McKnight Foundation commissioned Rice to paint 200 small cupcake paintings to give away as gifts at their annual awards ceremony. For (insert title of show here) Rice will continue to celebrate the aesthetic charm of the cupcake, incorporating the oft-sprinkled treat into her dreamy landscapes, and girly portraits.

I'm waiting to hear back from Mitrebox about how those outside Minneapolis (like, um, me) can purchase these and what the prices are, so I'll post again when I know more. In the meantime, check out the rest of the show's artwork in Amy Rice's Flickr set.
