CakeWalk: How to put on your city's very own CupcakeCamp, Part 3

CakeWalk is a weekly column by Mary Ann Porch dedicated to every baker who has ever struggled to achieve the right consistency with their icing, unsuccessfully searched for the perfect cupcake topper or just wants to learn something new. Because with a few helpful tips, cupcakes are a cakewalk.

Over the past two weeks, we have discussed the first two steps of planning your city's very first CupcakeCamp - laying the groundwork and finding a venue. This week, we finally get to a step that is far less complicated and, dare I say, fun? I'm talking about finding a graphic designer to help with all your CupcakeCamp visuals.

If I have learned anything in the past year since CupcakeCamp NYC, there are plenty of graphic designers, and many of them are college kids who will work for free. For instance, I was lucky enough to have a friend who is hoping to change his career to a more graphic design-related field. As such, he was more than happy to volunteer his services to my CupcakeCamp NYC efforts.

Once you have a graphic designer on board, it's safe to say that your job will be exponentially easier. Not sure how to upload graphics to your blog? Call your graphic designer! Not sure how to reconfigure the CupcakeCamp logo for your city? Get your graphic designer on the horn! But keep in mind - he/she is working for free so keep the demands to a minimum.

The one task your graphic designer should be assigned is the poster design for your event. For CupcakeCamp NYC, we used the poster design for postcards so we could leave them in local New York City bakeries as a way to attract our target audience: cupcake fans. Additionally, our poster was to serve as the face of the event and was distributed to all media outlets during our PR outreach.

Here a few things to keep in mind when coming up with your poster concept:

Logo: Obviously, the CupcakeCamp logo needs to be on there. That's a no brainer.

Event details: Once again, this seems obvious but you would be surprised how many event fliers I've seen that didn't have important information, such as the date, time and location of the event. Make sure your flier contains the date, time, venue name and full address, event e-mail address for enquiries, website address, and any other details worth mentioning (age restrictions, such as 21+, etc.).

Sponsors: If the venue hosting your CupcakeCamp has a logo, include that on the flier. It's the least you can do for them considering they are giving you their space for free. Any other sponsors should have their logo included too. For instance, Cupcakes Take the Cake was the media sponsor for CupcakeCamp NYC, so of course, their logo was included.

Most importantly, your poster should capture the spirit of your event. I was so proud with the way the New York City CupcakeCamp poster turned out as I felt it was a perfect representation of not only CupcakeCamp but New York City as well.

Next week, we'll be moving onto to step #4 of planning your very own CupcakeCamp: recruiting bakers.

Food2 announces 1st Annual Cupcake Cup

The bloggers over at Food2, Food Network's edgy food blog, have announced their first annual Cupcake Cup, a photo challenge involving, you guessed it - cupcakes.

It's pretty simple to enter:

1) Submit your cupcake photos.

2) The photos MUST be yours but the cupcakes need not be.

3) Submissions are now open. You can enter the competition here.

The prize is a giant cupcake baking set, and by giant, I mean a cupcake mold that will yield one gigantic cupcake. As far as the cupcakes not needing to be yours in order for you to submit a photo of them, this blogger thinks you should at least KNOW the baker. I mean c'mon - making a gorgeous cupcakes is at least half the battle.

Free cupcakes today at Sweet Temptations

From the Albany Times-Union - again, the umpteenth reminder for bakeries (or anyone, really) - if you are going to court the press, your website should be up and running so people can get information about you. I know many of you don't care, and this is a cupcake blog, not a business or internet blog, but still; if your potential customers have nothing to go on, no phone number, no photos, nothing but a news article, how can they check you out? A website is a must! Especially when searching Facebook for "Sweet Temptations" yields many options. (Theirs is in the works, but the one the article links to is not yet active.) If anyone goes to this, send us a photo!

How to get people to show up at 11 a.m. on a Saturday morning for the opening of your new bakery and candy shop? Give them free cupcakes.

That’s what Sweet Temptations, a new shop at 469 Albany-Shaker Road in Colonie, plans to do tomorrow morning. Store owners Nina and Salina Crisafulli will be joined by Albany County Legislature Minority Leader Christine Benedict and Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan for the opening ceremony, with 200 cupcakes to be given away to the first customers.

Lady Gaga cupcakes!

Yes, these are Lady Gaga cupcakes (red velvet) by Brownie of the blog Blondie and Brownie - go there to find out more and see more pics!

She writes:

In honor of the Grammys this Sunday night, may I present you with my tribute to Lady Gaga in cupcake form. Of course, I couldn't resist doing my interpretation of Lady Gaga's red lace number from the VMAs. I'd like to say that no cupcakes were harmed in the creation of her headdress and veil, but that wouldn't be true...

Why Lady Gaga? Well, why not? If I can do Liza Minelli as a cupcake, surely Lady Gaga deserves to be one, too. Liza was all sparkly and Funfetti on the inside, but for Gaga, I knew that she'd need a different cake. Then it hit me. Red Velvet--edgy, unexpected yet widely popular.
