Shoutout to the cupcake haters

Cupcake by Sweet and Saucy

And I use "haters" lightly, because I find this "Cupcakes Have Jumped the Shark" post on So Good hilarious, plus they used a photo from this very blog. The thing is, yes, cupcakes are kindof ubiquitous, but so what? Every day we are getting new visitors, and I keep meeting more and more fellow cupcake obsessives. This is not a trend, and sure, maybe cupcake mania will die down eventually, but I see no signs of it. But So Good is right - when cupcakes are getting mentioned in articles about presidential campaigns, in the New York Times, by Hillary Clinton on David Letterman, and a certain dessert doyenne devotes a whole week of programming to them, yes, maybe they've jumped the shark. But that's perfectly fine by us, if I may speak for my fellow cupcake bloggers.

I GET IT. No seriously, I GET IT. Cupcakes are delicious and soooooo yummy! OMG pink frosting!

That’s not the point.

What I really want to know is WTF happened? I managed to never once hear the word “cupcake” between the ages of 12 and 25. Then all of a sudden out of nowhere, one day I realize that I can’t walk 20 feet down the street without hearing “Cupcake, cupcake, cupcake. Cupcake, cupcake, cupcake. Ooooooo Cupcake!”

So don’t come flocking here to tell me how yummy cupcakes are, I understand. But what I don’t understand is how cupcake saturation has reached the point where I can’t even buy black tar heroin without receiving a flier wrapped around my hypodermic needles advertising the new cupcake store down the street.

Newsflash: Cupcakes are delicious today, they were delicious yesterday, and they were delicious 15 years ago. Nothing has changed. It’s just like in 1998 when everyone was smoking Cigars and celebrities all wanted to appear on the cover of Cigar Afficianado with a Cuban in their mouth. Now every popular actress wants to appear on the cover of Cupcake Quarterly with frosting from a Magnolia cupcake smeared on her face.

The cupcake obsession has peaked, and it has nowhere to go but down. You had your 15 minutes of fame cupcake lovers, but it’s time to face the facts: cupcakes have jumped the shark. Yeah, you heard me: cupcakes have jumped the shark.

So everyone chill out, regroup, and move on to a new food obsession in a quiet and orderly fashion.

Heh. Liked the heroin bit.

What does 'jumped the shark mean'?And why?

How bad does your day have to be to be annoyed by cupcakes' popularity?
Good call Jothemama. How absolutely uptight and bitter of a person do you have to be to be so annoyed by something that's so innocent and fun??
Maybe he just needs a good cupcaking and he'll feel better.....

Jumping the shark is a moment, usually referring to a TV show - but a defining moment when you know that your favorite thing has reached its peak. That instant that you know from now on...it's all downhill. Some call it the climax.

The other idea for a name of my post was "Shut up about Cupcakes Already" (in fact I think I will change it to that).

Surprisingly I think anyone who knew me would tell you I am the complete opposite of uptight and bitter. But that doesn't mean I need to hear about cupcakes every nine seconds.

You have no idea how many people have commented or e-mailed me to say "right on, this needed to be said but I was afraid to cause all my friends love cupcakes."

I do believe that person had a bad experience with cupcakes. Perhaps they were chucked at her when she was getting off the school bus? Her brother ate them all and blamed the loss of cupcakes for the bake sale on her?
It's cupcakes, for crying out loud! Not a crappy boy band. lol
