Cupcake Cannon at Johnny Cupcake Event

Wow. Wow I mean Wow. The continuing adventures of Johnny Cupcakes' suitcase tour knocks my socks off. This video of cupcakes being shot out of cannon and splattering people is so cool, fun and colorful. Don't try this at home though!

Portland's Kamp Grizzly developed a steam-punk style pneumatic cupcake cannon and set the stage for eating frosty delights at 120psi. The blasting buffet was documented in at 700fps coming off the Phantom HD Gold. As the evening shook down, cupcake enthusiasts continued to step in front of the cannon and camera. Some shaking in their boots, others perched in zen-like states, ALL were covered in delicious frosting, spongy cake, and showered in a mist of sprinkles.

swee10 mini cupcakes

I see cupcakes are often use to promote businesses. However with the name Swee10, (pronounced "sweeten"), it only makes sense that cupcakes would make an appearance. Swee10 is a site where you can find contractors for your home improvement projects. The mini cupcakes were made by Tawny Ong.

Possibly the prettiest cupcake liner I've ever seen

Seriously, how beautiful is this beachy cupcake liner from Star Bakery (via Flickr)? It's so elegant and eye-catching and, well, makes me want to be on a beach right this very minute.

They write:

Another new edition to the Star Bakery family are these really lovely cupcake wrappers. These wrappers are more bespoke and can be made to order.

These have a lovely dark blue sheen on them which doesn't show well in the photos and are best apired with a simple swirl cupcake.

Kentucky Derby cupcakes: on the official menu

From an Epicurious interview with Chef Joseph "Jo-Jo" Doyle, Levy Restaurants Executive Chef at Churchill Downs, who's in charge of feeding the 150,000 attendees.

Epicurious: What is the Cupcake Rose Garland?

Chef Doyle: The Cupcake Rose Garland is a new addition for this year. It pays homage to the rose garland that is draped around the Derby's winning horse.

We have chocolate cupcakes with frosting that mimics rose petals and we designed a structure to hold them in place in the shape of the rose garland. Guests can come up and help themselves to a cupcake. We think it will be pretty popular; we ordered 14,000 rose cupcakes.

From the opening:

Levy Restaurants, the group that caters the Derby, estimates they'll go through 475,000 pounds of shaved ice, 2,250 pounds of mint, and 7,800 liters of bourbon.

Sweet Revenge Cupcakes At Intuit Town Hall

Sweet Revenge Cupcakes

Yesterday, I attended a small business panel hosted by Intuit. It was a part of Intuit Town Hall. One of the panelists was our good friend Marlo Scott. After the panel ended,  there were lunch and some of Sweet Revenge cupcakes were there. Pictured above is the Sweet Revenge, Crimson and Cream and the Tart. I tasted the Tart, a new seasonal lemon cupcake made with lemon curd. It was delicious!
P.S. Check out Sweet Revenge's new site which was redesigned by one of her customers.

Cupcakes on book covers: YA novel You Wish by Mandy Hubbard

Just discovered that upcoming young adult (YA) novel You Wish by Mandy Hubbard has a cupcake on the cover! Description from Amazon:

Kayla McHenry’s sweet sixteen sucks! Her dad left, her grades dropped, and her BFF is dating the boy Kayla’s secretly loved for years. Blowing out her candles, Kayla thinks: I wish my birthday wishes actually came true. Because they never freakin’ do.

Kayla wakes the next day to a life-sized, bright pink My Little Pony outside her window. Then a year’s supply of gumballs arrives. A boy named Ken with a disturbing resemblance to the doll of the same name stalks her. As the ghosts of Kayla’s wishes-past appear, they take her on a wild ride . . . but they MUST STOP. Because when she was fifteen? She wished Ben Mackenzie would kiss her. And Ben is her best friend’s boyfriend.

10,000 Cupcake Pyramid Challenge to benefit American Cancer Society

A very cool cupcake benefit that's also trying to set a world cupcake record!

From Tampa Bay Online:

Organizers are shooting for a world record with the 10,000 Cupcake Pyramid Challenge in support of the fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

Contributors can drop off cupcakes at various sites in the "Cupcakes for a Cure" campaign.

The delectable dessert items then will be displayed during the Relay, which will take place Friday and Saturday, at Gulf High School's Des Little Stadium, 5535 School Road.

"Come be a part of history," Wendy Brenner urged in a message for donations. Brenner is unit president of the American Cancer Society Pasco County

"We are looking to set a world record for the most number of cupcakes collected in a structure, but we need your help," Brenner added.

According to Brenner, the goal is 10,000 cupcakes, whether homemade or store-bought. Organizers ask for "standard-size" cupcakes.

The final count of cupcakes is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Friday during the Relay.

The cupcake drop-off sites are:

• Des Little Stadium, 2 to 6 p.m., through Thursday

• Gulf Harbors Civic Center, 4610 Floramar Terrace, 9 to 11 a.m. today

People also can bring cupcakes to the Relay on Friday night. The Relay itself continues overnight from 6 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday.

Cupcake tasting at Dots Cupcakes, Pasadena, CA

On Monday, I had the opportunity to visit Dots Cupcakes in Pasadena, California (thanks, Simone for the ride). I went to one of their two locations, on South Arroyo (the other is not too far away, we passed it on the ride back). The shop was very cute, with a small amount of indoor and outdoor seating.

Dots Cupcakes cupcakes, Pasadena, CA

See my full Dots Cupcakes Flickr set here. The mini cupcakes were $1.50 each, and were pretty big for mini cupcakes. I got 5 of them, all of which were delicious. (Large cupcakes are $2.75.)

The lemon drop and fleur de sel cupcakes were my standout favorites. I think there was salt in the caramel because later some got smeared on the bottom of the box and I tasted it and it was sweet and salty. The lemon had lemon curd (I think that's what it was) inside in a thin layer (see below) and was tart and delicious. I liked the crunchy chocolate balls on top of the mint chocolate chip, and that flavor was very strong. The little strawberry white chocolate shavings on top of the strawberry shortcake added to the visual appeal and tasted great, and there were pieces of actual strawberry in the cake. The chocolate cake in the fleur de sel and cookies and cream was moist and delicious. All of them were great and well worth $1.50.

Chicago gets a cupcake truck this weekend

Well, it gets a soft launch of one when Flirty Cupcakes opens for business. From Time Out Chicago's blog:

Flirty Cupcakes, a truck peddling (wait for it) cupcakes, will soft launch this weekend.

Of course, the process of getting Flirty Cupcakes up and running wasn’t quick at all. Married couple Tiffany Kurtz and Chris Sewall have been working on the project since December, when Kurtz noticed an old, beat-up ice cream truck and realized it’d be a hit—if only it was cleaned up and filled with pastries.

At the time, Kurtz wasn’t aware that other cities had cupcake trucks. And she certainly wasn’t aware how many rules and regulations the city was about to make her address...

With a name like Flirty Cupcakes, it’s no surprise that this truck has a cute factor, or that it’s angling more towards women (who Kurtz explains are the primary buyers of cupcakes). The cupcakes, made by pastry chef Jason Cox every morning at Kitchen Chicago, come with built-in nicknames. There’s a McDreamy (it’s a chocolate cupcake with a chocolate-cream cheese filling), CBFF (”chocolate best friend forever”—chocolate with Nutella ganache) and a No Plain Jane (vanilla with vanilla buttercream). (There will also be weekly specials, the first one being a special Mother’s Day cupcake: Vanilla cake filled with cream and topped with white chocolate and blackberry frosting.)

Follow Flirty Cupcakes @flirtycupcakes on Twitter and on Facebook for the latest. Photos below via Facebook.

Zombie cupcake cookbook coming this fall

Zilly Rosen, who made the infamous Obama/Lincoln cupcake art exhibit in Washington, DC and runs Zillycakes in Buffalo, New York, has a cupcake cookbook coming out this fall from The Ivy Press called Zombie Cupcakes. Here's the description from, where you can pre-order it.

"Zombie Cupcakes" serves up an overdue backlash. Cooked up in the darkest of graveyards, it presents a ghoulish army of delicious creations that appear anything but sugar-coated. Recipes range from Zombie Flesh to Zombie Brain, from Gravestones to Night of the Living Cupcake. All the cooking and icing techniques are included, and every recipe features step-by-step instructions for the baking and icing, alongside devilish illustrations and photography. As a finishing touch, zombie quiz panels will test your undead knowledge, making this the book that will raise the spirits at even the most lifeless of gatherings.

Teacup cupcake molds at Perpetual Kid

Via CNET comes word of these teacup cupcake molds, which sound cool, that Perpetual Kid is selling for $17.99:

The Teacupcakes Cupcake Molds let you turn a standard sweet into something we can all lift our pinkie fingers while eating. The molds are silicone and allow you to bake your cupcakes right in them. They're reusable--giving them a definite benefit over the typical cupcake wrappers. A little frosting on top, perhaps a few sprinkles, and you have a special treat.

The Teacupcakes Cupcake Molds even come with saucers, to ensure that your tea party table is perfectly elegant. The molds come in sets of four, letting you invite a few friends over for tea and cupcakes. The Teacupcakes Cupcake Molds are made from pure silicone and phthalate-free plastic. Each cup measures 1.75 inches tall by 2.75 inches wide, which is big enough for the average cupcake.
