These cupcakes are by Over The Top Cupcakes in Stuart, Florida, via their Facebook page. I like the way the second and third ones below are positively oozing with toppings on the cupcakes. And I like their cupcake delivery van - I once saw a cupcake company's van driving around in Maryland and while I couldn't flag them down, just seeing it brightened my day.

Click here to see their menu, which includes cupcake flavors like:
BANANA -'NUTTER - Moist and flavorful banana cake filled with mini chocolate chips and topped with a creamy peanut butter frosting and mini chocolate chips with a banana chip on top
MALTED MILK CRUNCH - Malted milk cake filled with malted milk ball chunks and topped with a fluffy malted milk frosting with a malted millk ball on top

Two hearts inside a cupcake at The Divine Cupcake
I love the look of this hearts-in-the-cake cupcake by Eugene, Oregon bakery The Divine Cupcake. And I suppose, technically, this is one heart sliced open, but I'm going to call it two hearts since I'm seeing two.
I also think it's great that on Mondays they do a sugar-free cupcakes and they also offer gluten-free cupcakes (you can also place custom orders). Today's gluten-free cupcakes were Coconut Lime, Mocha, Lavender, Chocolate (via their Facebook page, which you can check for flavor updates). Visit divinecupcake.com for more information.

Kahlua drenched cupcakes by JavaCupcake.com
Yesterday was National Kahlua Day. Oh yes, I celebrated with cupcakes! I made a moist chocolate cake, drenched it in Kahlua then topped it with a Kahlua buttercream and a dusting of chocolate. Oh heavens, it's almost too divine to eat.
To read more about this cupcake or see more of my recipes, visit JavaCupcake.com!
JavaCupcake's Kahlua drenched Chocolate cupcakes
Makes approx 21 cupcakes (would make more if you put less batter in the cups)
½ cup vegetable oil
1 ½ cups granulated sugar
½ cup lightly packed brown sugar
2 tsp vanilla
2 eggs at room temperature
1 ¾ cup all purpose flour
¾ cup dark chocolate cocoa powder
1 tbsp espresso powder
¾ tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup hot water
Kahlua – yes, a whole bottle.
- Preheat oven to 375 F degrees. Line your cupcake pan with liners.
- In the bowl of an electric mixer with the paddle attachment, mix together the oil, sugars, vanilla, and eggs until completely combined or about 2 minutes.
- Pour yourself a drink. Yes, use the Kahlua you just bought for these cupcakes. Take a big drink.
- While they are mixing, whisk together the flour, cocoa, espresso powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
- Alternating flour and buttermilk, add the flour in thirds, beginning and ending with the flour. Scrape the sides and only mix until combined.
- Fold in the hot water and mix until combined.
- Fill cupcake liners 3/4 full.
- Take another drink.
- Bake for 10 minutes then rotate pan. Bake another 5 minutes.
- Who are we kidding here. By now, you’ll need to pour another drink to sip on while these are cooking.
- Cool in pans for 5 minutes then to a wire wrack to finish.
- While still warm, poke 8-9 holes in the cupcakes with a toothpic.
- Using a brush, drench the cupcakes with Kahlua. Three times. Yes, you want LOTS of Kahlua in your cupcakes.
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
2lbs (1 bag) of powdered sugar, sifted
1/4 cup Kahlua
1/4 cup milk
- In the bowl of an electric mixer using the WHISK attachment, whip the butter.
- Do you still have your drink? Take a sip, or gulp.
- One cup at a time, add the sifted powdered sugar. Scraping the sides of the bowl after each addition and mixing until thoroughly combined.
- Between each addition of sugar, alternate between adding the Kahlua and milk.
- Whip on high for 2-3 minutes.
- Chill for 5-10 minutes before piping onto cupcakes.
- Dust each cupcake with dark chocolate cocoa powder.
- Pour one last drink, get a cupcake, and relax!

"Chocolate Malt" cupcakes from The Culinary Chronicles
Blogger The Culinary Chronicles does it again with these "Chocolate Malt" cupcakes (via Flickr). Visit her blog to get the recipe. She writes:
Thus was my inspiration to give these “Chocolate Malt” cuppies a try. I turned to Martha Stewart’s recipe and was happy to find that my sister had a jar of Horlicks Malt Powder on hand. I did make two minor tweaks to her recipe as I read that folks found that the cake didn’t have enough malt flavor. As a result, I increased the malt powder amount by an additional 1/4 cup and folded in a 1/2 cup of chocolate covered malt balls into the batter. As for the recipe, it was quite easy to follow–pretty much a one bowl situation. And when I pulled the cuppies out of the oven, I was pleased to see beautiful even domes on the tops.

Inception-inspired Oscar cupcakes with absinthe
From The Daily News Online:
New York pastry chef Martin Howard was inspired by Inception when he created the "Treat within a Treat" cupcake. Where the film excites fans with a dream within a dream scenario, Martin created a devil's food cupcake that is filled with butter cream. The filling is concealed by a topping of chocolate ganache.
"I added my own twist on the traditional butter cream with a hint of Lucid absinthe to add an extra layer of flavor, and, of course, as a nod to the film's lucid dreams," he says.

Thanks for the love, New York Times
This was in the The New York Times a week ago, but I just saw it today, courtesy of my great-aunt Carole! Thank you!
Blogs that cover niche topics usually appeal to niche audiences. In this city, where there are more bloggers per square mile than perhaps anywhere else in the world, highly specialized blogs create zealously exclusive communities around topics as diverse as cupcakes (Cupcakes Take the Cake) and fixed-gear bicycle freestyling (Prolly Is Not Probably).

Cupcake Meetup At Make My Cake

Yesterday, we had a Cupcake Meetup at Make My Cake in Harlem. It was our 57th cupcake meetup and it was so nice to see new people attend including Harlem bloggers Michael from Greasy Guide and Tyrone from Tru Fashionista Now.

Owner Aaliyah Baker surprised us with the beautiful mini-cupcake tower.

A trio of Make My Cake cupcakes: Red velvet, strawberry and black and white cupcake.

The Cupcake Meetup attendees were in for a treat as I gave away some product from Pillsbury, Duff Goldman, Martha Stewart and Wilton.

I love the napkins at Make My Cake. Little touches like this are a great to make a bakery stand out. BTW, there was a celebrity sighting while were eating cupcakes. I saw Law & Order's S. Epatha Merkerson who looked great as she was picking up an order.

Oscar cupcakes!

"Oscar cupcakes" by shalin1. (Not sure who made them.) Anyone have any sure picks for the Oscars? Sadly, I don't think I've seen a single movie up for an award this year. Too busy cupcaking, I suppose.

Cupcake toothpaste and air freshener from (who else?) Archie McPhee
Archie McPhee, maker of many wacky cupcake products, has done it again, with even more cupcake products to amaze and delight (and maybe gross some people out?). They're now selling cupcake toothpaste (also available in bacon and pickle flavors) and a cupcake air freshener, pictured below. Wow! Stay tuned next week - I have an extra cupcake stress ball to give away! Descriptions below via Archie McPhee
cupcake toothpaste, $4.50
Brushing your teeth with real frosting kind of defeats the purpose, but with this Cupcake Toothpaste you get all the fabulous flavor of frosting without another root canal! Just put a dollop on your brush and after a few minutes of vigorous brushing your whole mouth will feel frosted! Each tube contains 2.5 oz of potent paste.
cupcake air freshener, $2
Make your car smell like a delicious bakery with this pungent, personified food air freshener. Each happy little Cupcake is 3-1/2" tall and smells like vanilla frosting. String for hanging included.

Girl Scout Samoa cookies or pretzels on cupcakes by Man Bakes Cake
I think I might have to place an order of the Samoa cupcakes when they are available - they look so tempting! These are both by the very creative Man Bakes Cake, who does custom cupcakes in New York City, via their Facebook page, where you can contact them about orders. The Samoa cupcakes are coming soon. I'm a big fan of other desserts on top of cupcakes...the bets of both worlds, whether you're bold enough to try to bite in and eat them both at once or pull the cookie (or whatever other concoction) off and do one bite of each at a time.

More Angry Birds!
You might remember our post a while back featuring Angry Birds cupcake toppers. Well, one of my favorite bakers (and not just because she baked a giant care package and sent it to my husband for me while he was in Iraq) has made her own toppers and actually put them on cupcakes! Carrie of Fields of Cake and Other Good Stuff is a cupcake genius and I only wish I lived closer to her so I could order some of these Angry Birds cupcakes for my addict husband!!
If you have made any Angry Birds cupcakes.... email them to me betsy at javacupcake.com!
