My last 2 cupcakes of 2011: gluten-free chocolate/chocolate and espresso Bailey's
I'll do my wrap-up of cupcakes I enjoyed in 2011 (short version: SO many!) but wanted to share the last 2 cupcakes I ate in 2011 (unless there's a sneak cupcake attack in the next four and a half hours).
Tu-Lu's Gluten Free Bakery was largely cleared out when I stopped by around 5, but I bought this chocolate/chocolate cupcake on the recommendation of a staffer and it was great. The frosting tastes like really good chocolate ice cream, in cupcake form. I don't even have words for it but if you know what a rich, chocolate-y sweet chocolate ice cream tastes like, you can imagine. The chocolate cake could've used a bit more sweetness. It wasn't bad, but wasn't as awesome as it could've been. Paired with the very rich chocolate frosting, though, it's fine.
This is an espresso Bailey's frosting on chocolate cake cupcake from Lulu Cake Boutique. It was delicious, and I wasn't sure I'd like it cause I'm not such a Bailey's person. I got it because it was one I hadn't tried from there before. The frosting is very buttery and rich so I didn't eat much of it, and it fell off as I was trying to peek inside and get a photo of the filling (I had pulled off a bit of the chocolate cake). The cake deserves a special shoutout; it was outstanding. Totally rich, moist, chocolate-flavored, sweet and delicious. I liked this flavor combination though it probably wouldn't be the one I'd personally reach for, but I look forward to trying their chocolate cake cupcakes in the future.

The most tempting raw cupcake I've ever seen, with a cookie on top and baked inside
Sometimes I think Shannonmarie at Rawdorable is just taunting those of us who don't eat raw food with her posts (I say that in a fun/joking way). To me, this amazing raw cookie cupcake speaks to me, saying: Eat me, eat me, see what you're missing out on. This looks incredible. She posted it as an end of the year naughty but nice treat. I say it's an over-the-top cupcake in every way. Perhaps we're both right! Happy New Year - hope you're enjoying your last cupcake of 2011, whatever kind it is.

These New Year's Eve ball drop cupcakes were actually made last year by the incomparable Confessions of a Cookbook Queen but being that it is New Year's Eve today, they seem appropriate. Peanut butter butterscotch chocolate cupcakes at sugar Sweet sunshine are delicious
I stopped in at this blog's inspiration (can you believe they opened back in 2002? A lifetime in cupcake years!), sugar Sweet sunshine (that's the official spelling, and I've never asked them exactly why) on the Lower East Side, yesterday, to treat some friends who were in from out of town to cupcakes. I was excited to see a new (to me) flavor: peanut butter butterscotch frosting on chocolate cake! It was delicious, and very different from their peanut butter frosting (which they sell on chocolate cake). They also had boxes of a dozen mini cupcakes to go. I bought a coconut meringue cupcake and a peanut butter butterscotch (total bargain price, for New York City or anywhere, at $1.75 each!) and was extremely happy with both.
We'd just eaten a fairly big lunch and one of the things I love about Sugar Sweet Sunshine is that their cupcakes are delicious but light; you don't feel like a bomb went off in your stomach after you've eaten them. It's also a fabulous bakery to just sit and people watch and hang out; super cozy and homespun, with art on the walls. And pudding! They told me that pudding and cupcakes are neck and neck in sales. I wonder what would happen if you put pudding on a cupcake? Or otherwise combined them. Maybe I'll stop back in soon and find out.
Check them out at 94 Rivington Street, at sugarsweetsunshine.com and on Facebook! Call them at 212-995-1960 for custom orders.

New Year's Eve cupcakes in Las Vegas: Retro Bakery has s'mores, banana split and mocha java cupcakes for you
Retro Bakery in Las Vegas is open today and they're debuting January's banana split cupcake (flavor of the month) one day early! They're open 10-6 today. And they're giving me a reason to get myself back to Vegas to try their s'mores cupcake (Chocolate cake topped with toasted marshmallow buttercream). Also pictured is their mocha java cupcake! Via Retro Bakery on Facebook. Visit retrobakerylv.com for bakery hours and custom ordering information and their Flickr account for more photos.

Banana split cupcake: "It's banana and pineapple mixed in vanilla cake topped with a swirl of strawberry and chocolate buttercream and peanuts." (And for those with peanut allergies, call the store, you can order them without peanuts!)

s'mores!

mocha java cupcake, available daily in January: "chocolate cake topped with espresso buttercream and chocolate-covered espresso bean crunch"
And unrelated to New Year's, here are some custom wedding and pirate cupcakes they made that seemed fun and festive that I wanted to share.

Champagne Cupcakes with Champagne Buttercream and Spun Sugar on Top, and Churro Cupcakes
Check out these amazing champagne cupcakes with champagne buttercream with extremely festive spun sugar on top by blogger The Curvy Carrot, who has the recipe!
She's also made lots of other cupcake recipes you should check out. One that I especially liked was these churro cupcakes. Specifically: "A buttery cinnamon cupcake, dulce de leche filling, fried tortilla strips dusted in cinnamon-sugar, and a cinnamon cream cheese frosting." Wow!

Cupcake on Portlandia
I'm watching the IFC show Portlandia, starring Carrie Brownstein (below) and Fred Armisen, for the first time, and really enjoying it. In the episode "Mayor is Missing," Carrie's character falls off her bike and as she's lying on the ground, a cupcake with a candle appears and she blows it out! Wouldn't that be awesome if it could happen in real life? Also, I think a cupcake bakery, of which Portland has several, would be a great setting for a sketch!
